Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Communal conflicts are a recurring challenge in many parts of Nigeria, including Makurdi Local Government, Benue State. These conflicts, often driven by competition for resources, ethnic differences, or political grievances, have far-reaching social and economic consequences. Local newspapers play a vital role in reporting these conflicts, providing information that shapes public understanding and influences conflict resolution efforts. Objectivity in reporting is particularly important in such contexts, as biased or inflammatory coverage can escalate tensions, while balanced reporting can promote dialogue and reconciliation (Okeke & Ameh, 2023). This study examines public perceptions of the objectivity of local newspapers in reporting communal conflicts in Makurdi, focusing on their role in fostering understanding and conflict resolution.
